Does anyone know how to remove the battery tray on 2002 4.6l V8 Explorer? I dropped a small tool that slid underneath it and I can’t get to it. I unscrewed the 2 bolts on the side but it’s still being held down somewhere. Thanks for your help

Anybody at all? Can you help me with this?

I removed my battery tray a while ago because the hold down bolt broke off and I need to figure out how to get the broken off part of the bolt out of the metal clip at the base. For now it is just sitting there with the weight of the battery holding it down. I don't remember anything other than the bolts holding it in place. Tomorrow I will have a look and see if I can figure it out. There may just be a couple of spring tension clips, I will check.

Alright awesome I just didn’t want to keep tugging at it and bust something my dad always taught me if somethings not going in or coming off right don’t force it. Haha you usually end up making things worse that way

There are 4 bolts. There are two on the side between the battery and the body and also two on the bottom under the battery. All of these are bolts that are threaded into the body. I don't see anything else holding the tray down. You will have to remove the long hold down bolt and remove the battery to expose the bottom bolts.

Yeah I did that Abe mine didn’t have any bolts on the bottom that I saw. You have the 02 4.6l right? I’ll go out tomorrow and take a look and try and take a good picture for you. It shouldn’t be this complicated I know...and I’m pretty good with cars I do most things myself but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I didn’t have the best light when I was looking before

Yes, I do, the XLT.

The bottom bolts are pretty deep in the formed bottom of the tray, so there may have just been some dirt or something hiding them. There are 4 holes in the tray and matching tapped holds in the body.

You can see the holes in the picture here of a replacement part,

DORMAN 00061 Battery Tray ($27)

The 3rd and 4th pictures have the best view.

I know there were bolts in all 4 holes in mine because I have 4 bolts in a plastic bag marked "battery tray". I really don't see anything else that would be holding the tray in place.
