I have a 93 eddie bauer explorer... now I know that in order to remove the factory head unit you have to insert 4 tiny rods, about 3 inches long into the four holes on the corners of the unit. Well i tried that, and the head unit was loose and wobbly but it wouldnt come out... I tugged and pulled on it all day but it wouldnt come out. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to take it out properly? Thanks.

Welcome to the site!!!

Rocket, hope I can help here. You are correct in your methods, however, it is possible to insert the rods too far in and that would cause you some trouble. You should insert the rods just far enough that you here a "click". Also, there should be a plastic slide in mount that slides on a metal bracket beneath the head unit...if you do not pull on the unit straight out enough, you could be binding this slide mount. Hope this helps..good luck man!

been there

I have a '97 model, but it comes out the same way, ford actually makes something called a "ford key" or something.. if you cannot get it out, try an audio shop, they did it for free for me.

The radio is stuck in by pressure on the sides. Spring loaded clips on the side that sort of stick out. What you're trying to do is push them in towards the radio so that the clips don't stick out and into the sides of the din to keep you from pulling it out. After you push the pins in, you need to take your fingers and push outwards a little bit. This should help take it out:

(PIN)<--- push push --->(PIN)

Pushing outwards on your end will, because of the holes, push the other end of the pins or keys inwards and hopefully push the clips inward.

You can also get the keys from an autoshop store, I think for like $3.

Hope this helps a bit.

Oh, also, if order to take out the radio, you need to take off the dash. Did you do that?

Remove the ashtray, undo the two screw behind it with a ratchet, then start pulling off the dash, easiest starting from your bottom left then counterclockwise. If you have automatic 4x4, watch for the connection cluster after you start pulling the dash away.
