Went to replace the front drive shaft (the one from the transfer case to front pinion) on my sons 92xlt and ran into a small problem. We figured out the back four bolts were 8mm 12 point head but can not figure out is needed to remove the front four bolts. So if anybody know what is needed to remove these 4 bolts that would be great.

Does it look like the pic below? If so, thats a Torx:

hmm, I havent looked at my 92 to compare, but it wouldn't surprise me if its a E-torx.. basically the reverse of that (the bolt head will look like a normal torx bit). I have seen them before on other vehicles.

I believe one is is an external torx, the other end is a regular torx.

So yea, IZwacks picture should be somewhat accurate, they should look similar to that. Go get a torx bit and that should work.

On a side note...get the toughest bit you can find, I had to use an air impact on my bolts and wasted two bits in the process. Impact is the way to go, just regular torque will twist one of those in half. Good luck...

The transfercase end is a 5/16 12 point (not external torx), the diff end is a torx. If you have trouble getting the torx bolt out heat up the yoke with a torch (propane will do) and they'll come right out.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to give it another try this afternoon to see if I can fix one thing or maybe give myself more problems like stripping out the inside of the torx head.

Ok.... That wasn't so bad. The new "used" driveshaft is installed and working just fine. Right tool for the right job makes everything easier. Thanks again guys.

So for future reference, which was it -- an external Torx or internal Torx? Or something else?

It was the internal Torx and the bolts came out easy, no heating, beating, or broken torx. Must have been my lucky day:)
