Removing ignition switch

My 89 ranger, non tilt wheel has a bad ignition switch. I can not turn it at all.
The book says to replace it I have to turn it to the "on" position, depress the pin and pull it out. Since I can't turn it at all, how do I get it out?
I have the covers removed off the column, and it got dark. That is as far as I have gotten.

Any help?

The only way I know is to turn the key on- you need a car thief to help you. Could you force it to turn with some pliers?

can anyone give another alternative to getting it out other than forcing it with pliers? I have the exact same issue. thanks
