The bottom mounts to the plate which holds the axle to the leaf springs (via U-bolts). That is a simple through-eye bolt (I dont remember what size). The top on the other hand is a little different as its held on by two 10mm bolts (so four total, two per shock) to the flat cross member running between the frame rails. It'll probably be a lot easier if you drop the spare tire cauz that gets in the way when you're trying to get to the top bolts.

the only thing that attaches with the through bolt is the rod of the shock? Meaning I will have a rod attached to the bottom, with nothing covering it?

Well the "shaft" of the shock (the part that travels up or into the body of the shock) is sometimes covered with a "boot" and sometimes its not.

Most off-roaders say F the BS and dont use the "boot" to cover up the shaft. Most road people who value their shocks put boots on them. Its up to you - I personally dont use the boot.

Shock boots look like this:

could i purchase these boots locally at an autoparts store?

Probably. But you can also get them online for cheap:

Pay attention to your shock body - my brother ran Edlebrocks there in Michigan for about 4 years until he graduated and recently, I saw that the shock body of his shocks are pretty much eaten through cauz of the salt in the winter.

Do you think the boots would help or hurt when dealing with the salt?

-Rich

The boots typically dont help much - thats why most off-roaders just throw em out. Most shock shafts are chromoly or have some other coating that prevents it from rusting. Its the body that is often eaten through and the boots only cover a very short part of the body.
But there then is the other argument of the "shock boot" dilema because while the boot can help keep moisture and whatever else out, in the event that moisture gets in, it is trapped inside.

now about these top bolts????

^^^^ how do I get those out?????

Rich

did they break loose from the shock? Mine were pressed into the hole on the mounting tab. All I had to do was take the nut off of the stud. If that stud is loose, try to grab the back of it with vice grips and remove the nut while holding the vice grips.

Tip: remove your spare tire. It will make your life 100x easier while changing the rear shocks.

Tip for the front: get all the extensions that you can and take the top nut off from under the hood.

Heck Yes! If anyone is reading this and thinking of changing rear shocks, drop the spare. I got the rear shocks replaced and they are working beautifully. Now I just need to find some Edelbrock IAS twin tubes to match up for the front.

I'm going to merge this thread with your other shock-related thread. Please try to avoid from starting multiple threads revolving around the same topic. LOL you even titled the two threads with the exact same title: "Removing studs on upper mount of rear shock".

Chillax with the "New Thread" button for a bit

Can I edit titles or close threads? I was trying to figure it out but with no luck. Not trying to start to many new threads. Does get my post up though :D

I'm not gonna be doing that much off-roading, mostly I like the way the new sports look lifted. If I decided to go off-roading more I would more then likely change shocks.

So Rich....how exactly did you remove the upper mounting fasteners on these rear shocks...I am having the same difficulty.

Thanks
