repacking bearings

Hi all,

When is a good time to repack your Front wheel bearings ? I have done some searchs on this and the only info i came up with was usually during brake jobs.

And also since i will be doing this shortly to my wifes friends explorer, is there much to it on a 96 2wd explorer
? or just a simple repacking job like usual?

Front wheel bearing on 96 Explorer 2WDs are cake. All you'll need to get the bearings out is a punch. When buying the new bearings, just make sure you get the inner bearings, outter bearings, and the seal. Its really pretty simple.

Here's how to find out if your wheel bearing need repacking

Jack up the wheel and shake the wheel, if it moves(other than spinning) then they need to be repacked. if not, they should be all set

From what I have found, the best tiem is while you have the brakes off. I have the hub assembly to deal with on my truck but at any rate if you are repalcing brakes then repack the bearings if they are in need of grease. This past brake job, I put new rotors on and just decided to put new bearings on while the whole freaking thing was torn apart to the spindle.

Bottom line is-Use your best judgement. Can't you tell if something needs greased or not?

Hmm... Guess my right front wheel bearing needs to be repacked... I'd do it myself but I can't get one of the stupid lug nuts off...
