Actually did. Two pieces of plastic sitting right there in the oil pan. They look like pieces of either the timing chain guide or the jack-shaft chain tensioner.
Thing is, the engine runs fine, there are no noises or anything that would indicate a problem with the timing chain.
I bought this 4.0 explorer used 7 years ago. Do you think it's possible that someone replaced these in the past and never retrieved the missing parts from the oil pan?
After reading up on how to install a timing kit I realize that would be unlikely the someone would miss these, unless maybe they were hung up in the engine somewhere when they did it and worked their way to the pan later.
Anyway, right after I bought this vehicle I noticed a sort of rattle coming from underneath the vehicle. Sounded like an oscillating vibration, like an impact driver would make but much lighter. I'd say more like noisy valves, but not coming from the valves.
I thought it was something in the drive train, maybe the transfer case, but never could find it. Now I'm thinking it's the rear timing chain. Only does it now and then, when it's at idle or moving very slowly, so low RPM only. I've had the vehicle for 7 years now and it's ran well the entire time, it just rattles a little every now and then at low RPM.
Me thinks me will buy a timing chain kit and installation took kit and keep them on stash just in case this thing does something problematic.
