How difficult is it to replace the input shaft bearing? I pulled my Tranny on my 94 4.0 Manual Ranger Xlt due to a rattleing noise Thinking it might be the pilot bearing. When I pulled the drain plug there was a bolt stuck to the magnet, Great! I pulled the top cover off the tranny to find that the plate in the center wall of the tranny holding the shaft was missing a top bolt, hence the bolt on the drain plug. And the other top bolt was just about to come out. I lock tied the bolts and put them back in, everything looked okay and the bottom two bolts of the plate looked okay also. The gears looked fine and the shaft turned smoothly. I swaped the pilot bearing and the throwout bearing looked good also, which i had recently replaced 2 months ago with the clutch. Reinstalled the tranny and Im still getting the rattling sound when I release the clutch. Im thinking its the Input Shaft Bearing but not sure if i can tackle takeing it apart to replace. I know its right behind the houseing but i will most likely have to take part of the shaft out and Im afraid if all the gears will just drop out like a puzzle.
Any advice on how to go about it without haveing to get the whole thing rebuilt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One more thing, when i pulled the tranny, the shaft had some play in it. about 1/8 of an inch.
