My cousin is in need of a replacement 4.0l sohc for a 2010 explorer xlt 4x4. Everything we see states 2006-2010 works. Does anyone know why an older 4.0l sohc can't be used?

I'm not sure why you can't use a SOHC long block from 97 up. The reason that it says 06-10 is due to that being the generation of your Explorer. However I think you will need to swap over the valve covers and intake, fuel rail and some other assorted bits, in essence everything that is different from the older engine. However I would stick with 02 up for less mileage, different heads, and better timing guide components.
