Have you tried replacing the shift solenoid pack?

I had mine rebuilt and had some 55w/55e parts in it and do what he could to beef it up...
$2,300 with a free torque converter (he replaced 15 k ago...)
Mine was burning fluid and then transferring it to torque converter thus frying it...
Too bad Ford did one at 33k 77k and another with full rebuild at 94k I've put ten on it still seems ok... For now 5k left on warranty..

Nope haven't checked the solonoids yet. I should have had them checked when I had the filter changed...my bad. Do I have to drop the pan to put a meter on them? It looks like I do from all the pics I can find.

Colin the 5R55W transmission found in the Explorers is actually not that bad of a transmission. There are some special considerations to take into account with them. If you plan to make allot more power than stock and plan on sinking some money into making things hold up then just send it off to a performance rebuilder to have them work their magic. It will come back and with a good tune be nearly bullet-proof. The build is not cheap but think of it as a long term investment. These things can hold up to 600rwhp pretty reliably now once they are built; which is more than plenty for what almost any Explorer owner would want.
