Replacement Shocks?

I'm due to get some new shocks, and there seems to be a lot of choices out there. 99% of my driving is on the road, so I'm looking for what will give me the best ride on the road, I guess. However, if I have to or want to take my X off road, I would like some shocks that are more than up to the task. Cost is not as much of an issue as versatility. Suggestions?

If cost is not an issue, the Rancho 9000X is your best choice. They are adjustable for whatever condition you are in. About $70 a piece.

If most of your driving is onroad tho, a set of Gabriel VSTs is your best bet. About $20 a piece.

Adjustable? Do you do it that with a tool of some kind? Sorry, I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to suspensions. Robb, you're from Richmond, eh? That's my hometown...where do you live?

The Ranchos are adjustable by a dial built into the shock, from 1 to 9. They are adjustable from very stiff to very soft.

I am in Henrico, in the Laurel area near Lakeside. Where are you from?

There is a red knob on each shock. Very easy to adjust, I do it often with my Rancho 9000Xs.

There is also an upgrade that allows you to change the shocks from inside the cab, while you drive. You can buy the shocks now, and then upgrade whenever.

I'm getting Monroe Sensatracs. Do a search on the forum and you'll find a lot of people have had good results. They're $36.99 each right now at Sears with free installation.

Just put on the Gabriel LT shocks today. Took about 1 and a half hours. Cost $104 at Autozone for all 4 with lifetime warranty. RA bushings later this week! The shocks are white and match my X

For street performance and ride quality I like the Edelbrock IAS Performers. They offer improved street handling with a smooth ride. They are somewhat firmer than stock, but they do not bounce and pitch like stock. I have them on my 1994 XLT and I love them. I cruise dirt roads or paved roads. No problem for low grade offroading. We now have them at Explorer Express for $69.95ea. with a life time warranty.

I have Bilstiens on the front and gas ryders on the back, both lifetime warranted by auto zone, conveniently enough. I love my bilstiens. They are stiff as all get out. I drive over road humps and my front end stays put like it was nothing, and my rear end bounces around. If you mostly, street, but want a firm ride, bilstiens cant be beat. Unless you go with the adjustable shocks. sometimes id love a more conformant ride. I heard from my old boss, an ASE mech, that he hated the IAS, and they werent worth the money he paid for them. They were on a burb though so perhaps different on an X.

At any rate, I love those bilsteins, and will be getting a set for the rear, as soon as i take those gas ryders off.

Just installed the Rancho 9000x's.....I just left them on the factory setting for now. I'm really pleased with the results...my X used to sway a LOT on turns, and now it stays nice and level. Bumps feel more cushioned as well.
