I'm going to be replacing my shocks on 92 Explorer XLT
I'm probably going to be going with Monroe Magmum Shocks, or at least thats what i thought the Parts store said the Monroes were called....anyone had experience with Monroe shocks??
My Second Question is ....Can anyone tell me the easiest way to replace shocks on a 91-94.....I have the Explorer maintence book, and it tells me how....i was just wondering if anyone knows an easier way to change them?? If not if you do it by the Explorer Maintence book, is it really easy?
I doubt that the whole job will take very long, i was just wondering if there is any short cuts.
THanks in advance,
RYan

It is actually pretty easy.. You can even do the front ones with the tires on.. but it is easier with the tires off..

Just block/lift the front (and remove the tires).. Remove the bottom bolt (easy to do.. but may need some penetrating oil if you are in the rust belt).. There is 1 bolt on the top of the shock stud (I think it is 10mm or so).. once that top one if off.. you can pull the shock out off the bottom and then out of the top..

if you have gas charged shocks you should put the bottom on first (don't bolt it down).. then cut the strap holding it together.. just guide the top of the shock into the hole as it expands.. and replace the top bolt..

The rear takes a little more time.. but isn't bad. If you need to.. Lift the rear of the truck.. I didn't need to lift it with a 2.5" suspension lift. Removing the Spare tire makes it much easier..

The rear comes off the same way EXCEPT instead of 1 single bolt on the top.. you have two (2). These two hold a bracket that the shock is screwed into. For the rear I removed the bottom nut (almost all the way).. then the top bolts.

When putting on the rear I would put the bottom on first again.. and then let the shock expand which should hold it up which will make it easier to install the top bolts.

it is almost too easy.. :)
