Hi!

Got a Explorer 2014 with Sync-2

Trying to figure out if and how I can replace the stock-unit with a random OEM unit, yet maintaining the control over the climate-control etc without having to resort to either buy the upgrade or keeping the stock-unit and adding an additional new OEM-unit...

Anyone got any information on the subject?

Kind Regards,
Karl

You can either get a sync 3 setup properly programed for your car, or you can run any aftermarket radio that is idatalink equipped with the maestro idatalink sync2/3 dash kit. The maestro idatalink module will bridge the gap between the control panel/radio and the hvac module and allow touch screen control through the radio. Both solutions are pretty expensive though. I went sync 3 and don't really have any regrets.

I'll second that I went the Sync 3 route (about $800 on Amazon) and don't regret it. Simple swap out with many youtube videos to walk you through the swap. Getting the connectors for the USB Ports off/on were a pretty tight fit though (ideally you have someone with small fingers). Once on Sync 3, you will pretty much use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay 100% of the time.
