hello to all
new to the site my name is dan and since i just bought a used 1998 explorer xlt i thought i would join this site. i need to replace my oem factory am/fm cass.cd radio with cd 6 disc changer in center console and am thinking about just installing an inexpensive standard size am/fm cd with a detachable face. has anyone done this. is it easy. i know there is a tool to remove the factory radio. also scosche sells dash install kits and wire harnesses. the volume control sticks on max volume at times and the radio stations wont light up. its gotta go. also once i swap out radios will this keep the 6 disc changer in center console from working. if so no big deal. maybe there is an aftermarket radio out there that i can use along with the 6 disc changer.any advice or part s i may need would be appreciated
thanks in advance,dan

Hey Dan,

Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, there isn't an aftermarket deck that will use your factory CD player, but the deck themselves are fairly easy to install.

Here is a writeup I did for an install for a '95-'97. Your '98 could have those style of connectors. Check it out...

If not, and you have 2 square plugs instead, the only wiring difference is that you don't need to hook up the remote amp turn on, since your 1998 has an amplifier built into the radio, so it's fairly easy to hook up.

You should need Metra harness # 70-1771 if it isn't like the one in the writeup as that's the one I just used in my 2000 Ex. Double check, but that should be the right one.
