I was thinking after 145k mi it was time to replace my Tie rod ends. The dealer already replaced one of the inners.

I was wondering how hard it would be to replace the outer tie rod ends, what a good brand would be and what special tools are needed?

Thanks for any input.

a coupla wreches.
Just make sure you count the number of twists it takes to remove the end. Count out loud in very deliberate steps. Write the totalt number down and when you put the new end on twist it the exact same number of times. That will get it pretty damn close for the alignment that will be needed when you are done.

It's very easy. Back the castle nut off the tie rod so that it's still engaged by a couple of threads and give the nut a good smack from the bottom with a hammer. If they are original you may have to beat on it a little or it may help to use a tie rod puller or pickle fork (rentable at Autozone). Using the puller will take more time as you will need to remove the dust shield, which involves removing the brakes. Once it pops loose, mark the adjustment nut and inner tie rod to mark position and follow Monmix's direction. Reverse the steps and torque down the castle nut.

I would use the greasable ones (Moog) and keep them greased. I used the "sealed" ones made by TRW and they lasted 11 months.

OH !!!!!!!!
Remember one side quite likely will have reverse threads

yup! moog all the way. They are a lil more pricey but are GREAT and last a long time

I like the Moog idea myself and I believe they come with a lifetime warranty.

Napa sells some high end type jobies for about $46 per side? Wonder what makes them more expensive?"

How do you turn the tie rod to get it off of the shaft once you break it free and loosen the large nut??

Moog greasable ends. Don't waste your time or money on the "sealed" ones. I had very bad luck with them (11 months). Let me know if you anything.

Once you break the adjustment nut free and remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle, the end should turn off pretty easy. If it doesn't, I think there is a flat on the inner tie rod - just turn the outer off with a wrench - but I don't think you'll need it.

Thanks very much, this has been super helpful. I can finaly fix my suspension after a couple of years of not knowing what the heck the problem was... :D

Ordered the Moog's from Summit racing along with the Energy tie rod boots. Came to $55

Went to all local auto parts stores near my home i.e. Autozone, Pep Boys etc and no one carries Moog anymore.

Summit is a great source and cheap to.
