Fixed

Hiya all,

I wanted to know if it was possible to replace the timing chains on an V6 SOHC without removing the engine. I think I read somewhere it was possible for both back and front (front requiring some extra work) but I can't find that link any more.

TIA,
Chris

You can do the front with engine in place if the counter balance shaft chain does not need serviced, Mine did. You have to remove the oil pan to service the counter balance shaft. Rear can only be done by removing the engine or removing the transmision. After having done a full replacement myself, I would never try doing it in the vehicle. It is much eaiser to work on the back of the engine with it out. It also is eaiser to clean gasket surfaces and get every thing back in place.

Thanks scdix50! The rattle is definitely coming from the front, though I am not certain if it is the main chain at the botton or the extension chain that drives the camshaft.. I will have to open up and look :)
