On my '94, it looks like I have two catalytic convertors but I know that one of them is a resonator to help keep the sound down. Does anyone know which one is the resonator? I would like to cut it out to increase flow and sound. ALso, anybody have the 40Series FLowmaster? I want to put one on, but want it LOUD. THanks.

i have a 40 series flowmaster, but it is not loud it has a nice mellow tone to it.

i was thinking about getting a 1 chamber flowmaster and see what it sounded like. i pretty sure it would be pretty loud.

all i need is someone to donate another explorer to me so i can get the 1 chamber flowmaster to try it on. lol

those 2 cats are cats. one is a pre-cat and one is a post-cat. your resonator should be further back. if you want loud AND keep your cats, run a 40-series flow and have them turn down a dump right after the muffler instead of runnin it out the back. the sound gets trapped between the bottom of the truck and the ground and its loud (on my 5.0, anyway.) and, i have a friend with 1-chambers on a 4.6 mustang; they are loud as HELL!!! they dont sound any different than regular straight pipes. I MEAN THEY ARE LOUD!!!

I have a '97 and the resonator is after the muffler located near the spare tire location. Those two you mentioned are cats. James t is right. I don't know if the '94 has a resonator.

Taking of the resinator...does that make it fail inspection in NY?? Does it increase HP b/c of flow? Is it worth taking off for sound? Lots of questions...answers would be great!:D I also gota 2000 XLT ne one know where the resinator would be located on it? Thanks

...fail inspection in N.Y.?
dont know. i dont see why it would. you still have a muffler, and you still have cats. its not gonna affect a smog test in any way. if you get an aftermarket cat-back, its not gonna have a resonator. as far as location, mine was right at the back around the spare tire. it looks like a small glass-pack style muffler. at first i cut mine off, and noticed very little diffefence in sound. also noticed no power increase. but, i got a 96 5.0, so yours could be different.

For three years now without the resonator, I always passed the inspection here in NY. Removing the resonator is after the sound not actually increasing the the HP.:bounce:

Nonoy, how'd u get ur resinator off?

My 92 has two cats and a resonator,I drove without a muffler and resenator for a year and a half, becase it was not loud, but once i put new on my ex ran better and the tranny shifted a little smoother

"Nonoy, how'd u get ur resinator off?"

I went to a custom exhaust pipe bender shop and replaced my entire exhaust with a 2.5" pipes. I paid $80 for it.:fire:
