My most embarrassing off-road moment came in my backyard...
I had just "inherited" my dad's '93 (he had gotten a '98 EB) and I didn't have anywhere to park, so we pulled up the backyard fence (boy, was my Mom thrilled about that one...)and I parked in the backyard (at least until we could pour a driveway extension). Well, one night we got one of those wonderful spring rains...I come out the next morning to go to school...the Explorer had sunk to its rims in mud! I throw some lumber down, inch across the bog to the car and try to back it out, but could only spin the wheels. I first try 4x2 w/some 2x6's under the tires for traction, rocking the wheel back and forth, but no go. Well, says I, let's try 4x4...again, no go, the transfer case wouldn't even engage (the motor would make noise like it was going to, but it wouldn't send any power to the front wheels)! I'm thinking, "Holy crap! I'm really stuck!" By now, I was an hour late for school...to make a long story short, a neighbor who happened to have the day off came over and winched me out. In a J**p. He was laughing the whole time...it was even less funny when I got it to the dealership and my dad saw the bill: $500 + labor (if I remember correctly) for a new transfer case. Needless to say, not one of my better moments...
