So, I'm assuming you all know what engine noise is and sounds like, right? Usually caused by a bad ground or cheap RCA's? Well I've got engine noise but it doesn't matter if the engine is running or not. It gets better, just wait!! This started one day outta the blue. The systems has been in for almost a year. All the components are pretty old ecept for the sub and they have been in a couple vehicles. Check out my sig. for a list. Anyways, here's where it gets wierd. It makes the engine humming noise with the motor on or off with the key in the accesory position. But, it goes away when I turn on my head lights WTF!! Has anyone else experienced this? I've checked my wire connections and grounds and they all seem fine. The only thing that I can still think of is maybe something in the HU failed and when I turn on the headlights it kicks the display over to dim instead of bright for the day and whatever inside is making the noise is affected. Oh, you can also hear it stop when a CD is inserted but as soon as it starts spinning it starts humming again. Does that fact alone mean it's soimething with the HU? You can hear the humming on tuner or CD.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks,
Khris

Does it go away if you unplug your RCAs. If it does I would probably look for a new radio. If it is still there unplug the RCAs from the amp and see if it goes away. When you find out when the noise goes away it will be easier to trouble shoot.

Check your batery terminal - side i had an old ass camaro and it had a problem similar with my CB more than likely its an accesory ground tht has been curroded.

pretty much the same problem

I've got the Eclipse 55430 HU like you, and drove it around with an Eclipse amp and nice speakers for like a year. then one day, I get this high-pitched squeal ALL the time, whenever the radio is on. Similar to your problem, but not quite exactly the same. Checked the ground, check all the connections...... Finally went to Radio Shack and purchased a ground-loop isolator. No more squeal. I was real happy then.
Good luck!

I had that same problem in a Volkswagen GTI. it came (used) with a alpine.. after about a year and a 1/2 i loud buzz started to come.. but it was just in the left channel.. so it was bugging the **** out of me.. so i went digging around and found that one of the door amps had created the noise.. this one was pretty ovious becuase you had to watch your foot otherwise you could burn the crap out of it.. so check your amps.. or the head units amp may of been faulty. just my $.02. take it for what its worth
