After purchasing my 2000 5.0 AWD Explorer I have been dissappointed with the amount of road noise. I used to work at a dealer and noticed this phenomenon when they were new. I don't get a chance to drive too many 5.0's lately but did drive a 99 Ranger 2wd and it didn't exhibit any road noise. If seems as if every change in road construction transmitts the noise to the interior. I wonder if the 4x4 explorer uses stiffer body mounts to give the vehicle more stiffness? Just looked under a 4x4 F150 and it looked like the body mounts were more "squished".

what type os tires are you using. Hve you had the camber checked. Yes it can be adjusted to a point. I had a "loud" wheel on my driver side. My camber was actually pushed to far out and i was riding on my outer tread which caused the loud noise. Also if teh ball joints are bad, for whatever reason, it can cause some noise, and wobble, just a thought

The tires are BF Goodrich Long Trails that are less than 5k and fairly even wear. I rotated them when I did the ball joints. I replaceed the left lower ball joint and upper control arm. Right side ball joints are ok. Camber is right in spec (-.5 degrees left side and -.75 on the right).
