Blown Engine...Help?

Forgive me if there is a thread on this, i've searched but have not found what I needed on here. And this may seem long but Im not a mech and aren't familiar with a lot of this so Im giving all info I recieved.

So last tuesday I use my explorer no problems. I don't use it Wednesday. I go to start it Thursday and it runs but there is a loud clicking noise coming from the engine. Sounds like a motorcycle. I think hole in exhaust but there is none and you can tell its coming from drivers side of engine. I chance it and bring it to mechanic 2 miles away. They hook it up to computer and says its misfiring1,2,3 cyclinders and exhaust is lean. But the 1,2,3 cyclinders are on the passenger side. Stethescope shows sound is def on drivers side, he suspects its a lifter that has failed. I leave it. Get a call Friday he took off the valve cover on the drivers side and finds a rocker arm just laying there not attached to anything. Goes further into investigating and finds that 3 lash adjusters (lifters) are messed up. Apparently he says they are 2 pieces but are put together as one and are not ment to come apart but he was able to just take them apart by hand without effort. Is going to replace them and the rocker, told me something about checking crank shaft with caliper a for spacing and stuff and checking if any damage was done internally. Also is going to replace the lifters on the passenger side since the one side has failed prob only matter of time before they fail too. Unfort this means having to take of whole top of engine (plenum) to get to that side. I ask him why this happened and hes not to sure seems to think just wear and tear. He got new lifters that are aftermarket but they seem to be slightly longer and isn't sure if he can use them and they woulnt cause damage, needs to check with supplier.
I also told him to go ahead and replace plugs since I got 136,000 on them.

Now I was wondering if this is a common problem?
What causes this?
Will those after market lifters work or do they need to be oem?

Which engine?

Sorry, V6 SOHC

OK, I don't know if it is a common problem or not, but I had a similar issue on my SOHC. Best I can tell, a valve stuck OPEN, I suppose because the vehicle was sitting for a few years. I would start the truck every so often, and I noticed it was mis-firing. So tapped on the gas a bit, and the loose rocker arm was struck by the cam lobe, and thrust into the valve cover. The valve cover was damaged, but everything else was OK. I put it back together, and have put about 16,000 miles on it with no problems (with the ENGINE lol).

EDIT: There are a few pictures in this thread, if you are curious: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2303827#post2303827

Just got a bad phone call, mechanic fixed the rockers and lifters on top of engine, turned it over and noise is coming from the bottom of the engine now, says engine is no good. NOW WHAT?
Get a new engine?
Get a used engine?
Get rid of the truck?
I have no idea where to go or what I should do now.
I just put $800 for new tires and $2,000 for new transmission and drive train 2 years ago.
I kept good care and maintenance on my truck, why would this happen to the engine? Is this common for this vehicle, did ford use junk engines?
Looking for any advice.

Probably all started with some engine noise that you ignored. It ment that your engine was lacking lubrication (oil starvation) - who knows, maybe a failing oil pump. That lead to broken cams, eating of the main bearings... Low oil pressure is common on those engines past 100k miles.

My engine is still working because I replaced the oil pump and I am running 5W40 oil with "Restore" additive. Who knows how long i have.

All of that was checked out, oil was fine, pump has plenty of pressure.

Now I have several choices, and not sure what i am going to do. Im out of work and living off savings thats just about gone.
Should I:
A) replace engine with a reman engine with 3 year or 100,00 warranty for $5,900 including labor engine, tune up, new wires, plugs, belts, hoses, thermostat, etc.
B) Used engine from a 2001 explorer with 90,000 miles on it with 90 day warranty for $2730 including labor, engine, plugs, wires, coolant, oil, misc.
C) try selling as is maybe get $1,000 out of it
D) Scrap it for $400
E) use the money i'd repair the truck with and buy a used car for cheap, that I am unfamiliar with how it was maintained and run the risk of needing new trans, tires, etc
F) any other ideas???

Live in Long Island? Can't you live with public transportation till you get a source of income? I would not invest in a car when you live from savings. But that's me...
