Good morning, I was looking to ask for some advice about some of the roof ridge paint on my explorer. It is a generally well known problem that the ridges on the roof will hold water which eventually thins the paint and might lead to premature rusting. At this moment there is no apparent rust, however the corners of the ridges are down to bare metal. I have almost no experience with paint, and was wondering what some of the solutions were either to protect the paint or to repaint the roof entirely. I will answer any questions that are posted on the forum, however I am probably not able to provide pictures on this one.

repaint before rust.. rust is like disease... or chevy (jk) :D you dont want it ;) i mask off surrounding then would sand down the ridges and the area surrounding to feather in work, then spray primer (such as the rustoleum 2in1), thenbase coast (like duplicolor ofxord white, etc) then your clear (im partial to 2k clears vs 1k)... this may be somewhat similiar to what youte looking for!

Then I will get to it when I can, hopefully I can find a base coat which matches the original pacific green color.

It appears as so!
Also, off topic question...
how does a 2nd gen owner like you end up as an important member of the 1st gen forum? This is something that just caught my eye but makes me ponder nonetheless.
im not important ;) and paints are pretty much the same accross time anyways! and a few times i thought someones 1st gen was a 2nd gen so i gave advice relatign to the 2nd gen SLA for getting about TTB 🤣 :banghead: not perfect, but some stuff (like this) can apply to both gens

or...i could say im like Big Bank Hank... im everywhere :D :D "throw your hands up int he air, and party hardy like you just dont care"

heres a linkt o the clear i used, 2K Clear coat - SprayMax

also mentioned n the video... for primers i used this one iirc Rust-Oleum Automotive 11 oz. Gray Filler Primer Spray 249279

luckily you have no rust yet, as if you get rust then you have to sand it down (imo) or use rust reformer, but i prefer to sand thru the rust, as moisture & rust will continue to spread :banghead:

i hate rust... this is a good reminder for me to take care of my roof ridge rust!!! and the rust under the cargo door seal... :(

edit: forgot to mention this, but obviously this is a "touch up" style job, and isnt meant to look like a factory job, as there will be slight color variation as well as that out of a can you get some orange peel (but the clear ive used at least has a very good tip), but should look quite close, that imo you shouldnt notice it much without looking closely (or being a concours judge...)!
