My 2001 explorer sport 6 cyl SOHC automatic is rough at idle mostly AFTER being warmed up. It stalls sometimes when shifting into park. If is doesnt stall, it comes close. It also seems to make a poping sound every 10 seconds under the hood. I checked all the connections thinking a sparkplug wire came looser but that wasnt it. The CEL is on but I dont have a scanner. Yet. Any ideas on what it wrong here?

Take it to Autozone and have them pull the codes. They will do it for free, just call ahead and make sure they will do it. Once you have the codes, post them here for advice.

as indicated, the code(s) might help so you need those. As for the popping, I suspects its your AC clutch cycling. When it cycles to on, more pressure is put on your engine and if it isn't idling well to begin with, this will likely cause it to almost stall. Best probably guess with no codes / info, is that it is a faulty IAC. Simple replacement IF indeed the codes indicate that area.

they refer to the egr system.... potentially a problem with the egr not being regulated properly.... it could be stuck or sticking.... could be the popping sound you hear. This could result in poor idle if its open when it shouldn't (ie. during idle)... it usually opens during normal driving.

Thanks. What should be my next step to fix it as I plan to take care of this myself. Should I replace the EGR valve or attempt to clean it?

I think the egr valve is easy to replace (never done one though) not sure about cost. I think the system is some what complex so just trying the valve may or may not address your issue. I think there is a vacuum regulator also involved but again don't know about cost although again I think its easy to replace. My "plan" usually involves replacing the least expensive unit first.

I replaced the EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor, no more problems!! (so far)
