Has anyone been using royal purple? I was gonna do an oil change soon and wondered if it was working well for anyone.

I am using royal purple the API licensed one in a 2010 ford explorer ,v6 with 84k on the odo, with the royal purple oil filter.

I am on the second oil change using royal purple. On the first oil change on a 59 mile trip at 60 mph I averaged about 25 mpg. Usually only get around 19 mpg on the same trip. it faded to about 22 mpg for the rest of the life of the oil. On this oil change I averaged 26 mpg for the first 59 mile trip and now I get about 20.9 to 23 mpg depending on how heavy my foot is when accelerating. So far I am happy with it.

If you order the oil and filter off amazon it cost around $40 for 5 quart jug and $14 for the oil filter. Total cost of $54 or so for me. And each additional quart is $8. Local auto parts store is around $10 a quart.
from what I have found is right around how much it costs to put full synthetic from a quick lube place where I live.

Royal Purple got some of the worst reviews from Blackstone Labs test reports after being run 3,000 miles in Nissan VQ 6 cylinders. The spread sheet can be found on maxima.org.

a few years back Hot Rod TV took a lake model V8 Mustang and ran it on a dino to get base numbers. then they replaced all the fluids with Royal Purple and re-ran the tests, expecting improvements. well guess what? the vehicle produced less power and got fewer MPG than with the old fluids. this leads me to believe RP is just an expensive bunch of hype. therefore, i wont use it.

i use a high quality full synthetic oil in all my vehicles and i am very happy with it, but i'm not going to make a recommendation, as i know it will just lead to other's posting with their opinions on which oil is best. do your research and make your own decision.

I have also heard bad things about Royal Purple, and their price is insane.

IMO, stick with Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, or similar. Note that Napa's house brand is made by the same folks that make Valvoline (Ashland) and it's often on sale for $3.49/quart. As an aside, Napa's Gold and Silver filters are made by Wix, which are also the best of the best and not expensive.

Walmart has 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 on sale for $26. Just picked up one for my X last night.

that's not a sale price. that's their normal price. it's about $10-$12 cheaper than what the auto parts stores sell it for. just be sure to buy the 5 qt jug, as the single qts turn out to be more expensive.

Yeah, but RP "saves gas" (because is thinner) :D
Same thinking was behind the change that Ford did when they recommended 5W-20 oil instead of 5W-30 in my 5.0L engine.
PS: Now I use Mobil 1 too.

Yeah I use a lot of the Motorcraft 05W20 synthetic blend it's very good and about $18 for five quarts.

It's not a bad oil, but it's a very poor value for the money. Just about any API SN 5W-30 oil would be fine.

If you're looking for the BEST oil for a DD I'd suggest the Amsoil group IV oil. Very expensive but you can go 15,000+ miles on an oil change. Assuming the truck isn't losing oil and doesn't have any other serious problems.
