- 2008 Explorer Eddie Bauer
A few days ago the service RSC light and an annoying chime came on in my 2008 Explorer Eddie Bauer. I had read about this issue previously, but never seemed to find a consistent reason for it. Most seemed centered around the wheel bearings and antilock brake sensors. I read one guy who said it was caused by his battery preparing to die. Since I had recently replaced the hubs and bearings on the front, and the brakes all-around with new discs, I hoped for the battery failure. My Ford Motorcraft battery is 3 years old. Yesterday, pulled into the driveway joking about the Exploder being able to make it to the city fair and back without having sudden heart failure, put the Exploder in Park and the battery dies. I charged that block of plastic for 24 hours, and all it would do is let the interior lights come on for 30 seconds. I have never seen a battery die like this. Luckily, I have a $50 coupon for GMC parts, so I'll give the Ford a heart transplant. Hope the blood type is compatible
This poor thing has 200,000+ miles on it. I just want to be able to drive it to Goodwill on its last legs and be done with it. The preacher that had it since new changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles, but didn't ever change the spark plugs, antifreeze or any axle or transmission fluid. I bought it with 175,000 miles on it for $2k from his estate, promptly replaced the transmission (what a piece of poorly designed and manufactured junk that is- R55S), pulled the plugs and found no electrodes left, replaced the coil, wires and plugs, EGR, PCV, Water Pump, Belt and tensioner, hoses, antifreeze, transmission cooler and hoses, Fuel Filter, Front Wheel Bearings and hubs, brake discs and pads all around, and one foglight. My wife's grand idea to get a nice-looking Eddie Bauer for cheap (it looks 2 years old-Preacher did wash and wax it, even if he neglected to replace anything but oil and oil filter), has now cost me over $5,000. After seeing how cheap this thing was made, and learning the hard way how much of a PITA it is to work on, it will be my last Ford product. Unless I find a new GT350 for less than sticker price, but that is dreaming for some reason.
Sorry, had to get this off my chest. These things are junk. How they manage to last as long as they do is a minor miracle. I am still waiting on the dreaded timing chain death rattle
