The rubber mount that's just behind the muffler on my 06 has failed, it's not totally broken yet but the rear of the exhaust is touching the body and when I accelerate I can hear it vibrating. I took it to ford and they looked at it but they said this isn't covered under the extended warranty I have. I am not very tech savvy, can someone help me remove the old mount and install a new one? What tools do I need, its really tight on there I tried tugging at it to see how hard it would be and I can't even get it to budge.

Is it the oval bushing that holds the exhaust pipe? If so, I used lots of wd40 and a long screwdriver and slide it into the hole and wiggled it out.

If the old one doesn't come off easily, then I wouldn't even screw around with it: Make sure the new one is exactly like the old one, and then cut the old one off. Either using a knife or a hacksaw, whatever you can use to cut through the rubber. Then use the WD40 or some silicone lube on the new one to make it easier to install.

how do i know which one to replace, any ideas?

Ive got the same problem on my 06....Ive been looking for alternate ways to hold it up

Should be obvious if it is broken. Just look at the rubber hangers from front to back and replace it if it is broken. You will probably want to raise the truck up on jack stands; don't get under any vehicle that is only supported by a jack, always use jack stands.

Ya. I can tell mine is broke. But its from off-roading and dragging the pipe going up hills. So I want something to hold it up a little better for next time.

it doesnt look broken, however the exhaust is touching the frame in the rear of the vehical, i put a jack under the mount thats next to the muffler and then tried shaking the exhaust so i belive this is the one that is broken. however its not torn or ripped. its still in tack.

When the oval rubber bushing failed (the hanger ripped through the hole) on my X I just used a stainless steel hose clamp around the entire bushing to keep it together..

How long has this lasted? i would rather do something easy than go to a mufler shop and pay $$$$$$$$$$$$, i might try this and if this doesnt work then i will just get a new rubber mount.

Its been 7months+ so far. That includes several wheeling trips the last one 3/21/09 ripped off my tail pipe, but didn't affect the repaired bushing @ the muffler (so I know it will hold up). When I was working on my brake lines I noticed the rubber bushing was of the metal hanger rod. When I went to re-install it I discovered the rod had tore through the rubber hole.. I threw on the hose clamp and its been fine ever since..

YAY!! finally a cheap repair that i can do :D Thank you DeRocha im gonig to homedepot tomorrow :) im getting a hose clamp. Even if this is temporary and i fix it in 5-6 months its better than how it is now.

Edit: I found a hose clamp and it didnt work, anyone else know what i need to do? there are three rubber mount. The front and rear mount are close together and the center mount has a gap in it big enough to stick your thumb in there, its about 1/2 an inch gap.

Basically at this point the exhaust is touching the cross member that goes over the rear axel. (sorry for lack of technical terms)

Bump, i bent the exhaust mout a little and put a clamp on the rubber mount, and so far the exhaust is about a half inch away from the cross member. is this enough? should i go to a muffler shop?

...Take it to a muffler shop...I would be surprised if they charge you more than $10...;)

Yea, thats what i figured. Thank you Tbars, i'll call tomorrow and get some idea of when they can fix it. :/

...If you just drive in they may fix it cheaper and within a few minutes...When you schedule it may cost more...:dunno:
