well he did try that according to the new story link posted above. But claimed nothing was working at the time.

I dont believe it, not to sound like a dick but I think it was a PR stunt.

I agree... I've had issues with my truck... 3k idle... try stopping in D with that on ice... not very easy but cmon.. common sense.... put it into N, pull off the road.. ect..

This whole story is just so full of crap..

Lets just say that the cc Was stuck... and it was trying to keep to speed because he was trying to slow the vehicle .. was the shifter completely broken off? I'd rather have a blown engine than to die in on-coming traffic... why was he on the wrong side again? What about instead of trying to just kill the cc, trying to hit the coast button? There's just way too much about this that sounds fishy. I would like to read up on the report after the vehicle is looked at.

One thing is for sure his story is full of crap! Just like the Toyota drivers who say the same thing about their runaway cars, the real cause of the accident was the lack of knowledge of the driver of his vehicle, and being DWI (driving while incompetent)

Apparentlt, there were similar episodes in the UK in the late 90's with Explorers as well.

Also, an interesting comment on the original news site;

In Mr Weir's defence there was a similar precedent for this in the US when I was living there. A police officer, in Florida if I remember correctly, had exactly the same experience on a highway. He radioed ahead so that other police kept the highway free for him while the car raced at full speed and he was unable to stop it by any means. If my memory serves me it lasted for 30 mins until the car ran out of petrol or the engine overheated."

The report by Ford will be very interesting
