ok, I have done this in many of my cars, but never have worked on an explorer like this. I was wondering if there was enough room under the carpets to run a set of 4 guage wires. I haven't taken anything apart yet to look, but i figured i would ask first. And if there was already a hole in the firewall for the wire to pass through, or would i have to just drill one and use a grommet? I will be using a Kicker ZR360, Clarion APA1200, and Clarion APA2102 amps. I will have 3 XPL 12's pushed by the ZR360, two 6.5 mid bass drivers pushed by the APA1200, and the Clarion 5X7 plates driven by the APA2102, any imput will be appreciated.

I ran a 4-guage through my firewall to underneath my back seat. There's enough room under the carpet so you wouldn't notice it, but I chose to run mine in the channels (not sure if the 97 has those?) by the doors. Theres actually a channel on each side, you pull up the piece of trim, then you pull up the carpet a bit, then release a few body bolts, and theres a nice convenient channel to run wires through! I've probably got 10 wires in there in addition to the ford wires that are there (which is the reason the channel's there of course). By the way, to get the 4-guage through my firewall I used a hole that I had drilled in it previously when installed a couple of sets of lights. I think I have 5 holes in my firewall that I've drilled, LOl. I also have a 8-guage (I think) wire going through the firewall, through the same channel, to my amp behind the back seat.

i've got 4 guage in mine. you have to go through the firewall. there is a punch out type palte by the brake peadl, dril through that and run it in the channels under the panels by the doors on the driverside. it was real easy but well worth it. i have like 20 feet of it cause it goes to the capacitor and through my amp rack to the amp. good luck, if you check back in the next few days i'm gonna have all new pictures of my whole setup.

I have 4 gague in my 91 and i just placed it under the carpet in no particular place and you cannot notice it one bit. I had to drill an 1/2" hole, however, in my firewall. We ran 4 gague in my buddies 96 with no problem... there was a bushing type thing above the brake and the the left an inch or so (unless they changed it). He just punched a hole in the bushing and ran the wire through.

no sweat with the 4 awg. just pop off your door sill and youll see the channels there. if it doesnt fit in the channel, put it next to it, i was actually pleased at how well it worked out in my car.
