2008 Explorer Eddie Bauer
In the saga of the new-to-me Exploder, I keep running into interesting problems. My wife says it gives my project truck "character."
This is a 2008 Eddie Bauer 4.0 liter that has a delayed shift from 1st to second, 192,000 miles on it, tranny rebuilt at 165,000 miles. I installed new factory plugs last week. I have a new coil, plug wires, and Fuel Filter in the garage, since I figured I would need them soon enough. The truck has had the oil/filter changed religiously every 3.000 miles, but other than a new Radiator and A/C Condenser a couple of years back, and the rebuilt tranny, I don't suspect much has been done. Everything works, the tranny is just slow to get out of 1st gear. Today, after I replaced the right Fog Lamp housing that was rocked, I decided to drive to the credit union and back, about 30 miles round trip. On the way to the credit union, I was on Cruise at 70mph, everything fine. Without warning, the cruise dropped off. Giving the truck some gas, I experienced what appeared to be either severe miss, or a backfire. Truck lost power. No warning lights at all. I had the radio on loud and did not hear anything at this time. Backed off the gas, and it settled out and would accelerate slowly, but seemed starved for fuel. This type of speed loss and inability to accelerate without the miss and the transmission jerking hard, happened once more as I arrived at the credit union. On the way home, it happened when driving at 60mph, and this time the CEL lit up. By this time, I am convinced that I need to replace the Fuel Filter, Plug Wires and Coil, which is fine since I already have them ready to install. The truck idles fine, but my Autel AL519 scanner shows the Fuel Level Input erratic, Fuel Rail Pressure very erratic, O2 Sensor Bank 2-Sensor 2 all over the map like a roller coaster, and the Short Term Fuel Trim Bank 2-Sensor looking like the stock market swings, up and down like stairs. Not knowing what else to do, I will go ahead and change out the Coil, Plug Wires and Fuel Filter. Once that is done, I will take the truck for another drive to see if it repeats the issue or is healed. The only thing that bothered me much was the tranny jerking like it was being slammed back and forth. I assume this happens due to the on/off impact from either the fuel starvation and/or the ignition problem. The O2 sensor on Bank-2 makes we wonder if that is the bank that is misfiring. Unfortunately, the scanner was not hooked up on my drive and does not show a misfire, so I am just guessing. Since I already have the parts, no big deal.
If anyone can shed any light on this issue, I would love to see your thoughts. If all of this is due to a faulty transmission shaft speed sensor, I will gladly replace the bad sensor, but the ignition stuff and fuel filter are easy enough to do first.
Thanks!
Jordan
