Running on CNG?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if it would be at all possible to convert my first gen explorer over to run on Compressed Natural Gas? Thanks.

Well I didn't know if it was something relatively easy, modification wise, kind of like converting to propane injection.

there is a company that makes the conversion for some trucks i don't know the exact list. try calling or talking to gotpropane.com and see if they can help you

i actually own a cng explorer. it was a state owned vehicle, bought at auction.

thanks dkchrist, and eploderpilot, that's good to know it's been done. The main reason I was asking is because I am moving to West Virginia next year and alot of the land for sale there includes hookup for free unlimited CNG, so I figured it'd be nice to fill the gas tank for free

Why do they have free hook ups? You could heat your house for free, dry your clothes, cook your food, etc. You could even start a business refilling cylinders to sell with CNG.

I don't know exactly why they have free hookups, but I think it's because there are big "reserves" where the gas is "stored" on these properties. Kind of the same thing as if you were to drill for oil on your property, you would own the rights to the oil if there was any.

WOW. I cannot believe that! it will be nice to have free gas, but i'll be honest with you, that thing must make about 35 HP. it's slower than evolution....

If the engine were optomized for CNG, power would be equal if not slightly higher than if running gasoline.

Honda makes a dedicated CNG car, the Civic GX, and it has 12.5:1 compression, and most likely an advance curve and cam profile designed to take advantage of the very high (116) octane CNG. That model makes about 15 HP more than its gasoline counterpart, and fuel efficiency if converted to what's called GGE (gasoline gallon equivalent), comes out at around 28-39 MPG. Fuel capacity is equal to roughly 8 gallons of liquid fuel.
It also has the lowest emissions of any internal combustion engine automobile ever produced.

The energy company will have a materials lease on the gas below the property. A normal part of this lease is that the landowner gets rights to a portion of the gas produced from the wells on the property. It is metered and you are only allowed to a specific volume of gas per month, so don't try to start selling it or abusing your rights as the man will come in his big pickup and have a talkin' to you

Hi.

I just converted my 2006 Explorer to CNG. It is really nice. Gained lots of horsepower. Took about a day for the mechanic to do it and total cost was 1500. I live in Europe and the price of fuel is 6.77 a gallon and CNG about 3.40.

I might buy a cng compressor and my cost will be 1 dollar a gallon here in Europe.

i actually drill oil and gas wells, and been trying to get the producers and utilities to invest in cost friendly compressors for home use.
