We recently bought a 2014 Explorer Sport and if the climate system is off, every now and then we hear a rush of air coming from somewhere on the drivers side of the vehicle. We haven't been able to pinpoint it but my wife describes it as sounding like the ocean. It's really a quick rush of air that you can hear but don't feel and it seems to happen at random times. It doesn't happen when the climate system is on but that may be because the air is already going at that point. Sorry for not having a better description but I figured I'd try here and see where it led. It's actually pretty annoying so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum mpunt.:wavey:
I always have my Climate ON and set to Auto so I have a difficult time trying to relate to your issue. I can tell you that I have heard the air increase and decrease in volume and also noticed sometimes the increased noise seems to move to the passenger side. I guess that may be part of the 'Auto' system. This is usually before the inside temperature setting has been reached. Once the set temp has been reached the whole system quiets down.
Perhaps other members will jump in and offer their knowledge/advice.
Happy motoring.:)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I was hoping someone had the same issue that I'm experiencing. Climate off, radio volume really low or off and you hear a rush of air somewhere on the driver side. I just can't figure it out. If the dealership was close, I'd bring it in but that's inconvenient.

Hey mpunt!

I see you are in Long Island, NY... Have you been using the seat heaters by chance? If you have the Heated/Cooled seats, when using the seat heaters, you will hear a sound much like you described. They do not blow continuously (as they do in cooling mode), but rather blow for a few seconds and then stop, only to blow a few seconds again a little while later. I believe it has to do with how the peltier mechanism that is used for the climate controlled seating in the Explorer works. To me, the sound of the rushing air almost sounds like listening inside of a sea shell, lol.

Yes, my wife described it as listening to the ocean (like the seashell). But the problem is that it happens when the climate is off and seat heater is off. So why would there be any noise coming from the seat?
When it happens the best idea of where it sounds like it comes from is high on the driver's side. Like the headliner or high by the door. Since it's so random, it's so hard to catch and be ready for it.

Well, there goes my idea! I haven't any other ideas, so I will wish you good luck in finding your noisy gremlin. Please keep us posted :)

Since visiting your dealership is a bit of a trek, mpunt, you can bring this up the next time you're in for a maintenance visit and save yourself the extra trip. I'll be happy to bring this to the attention of your regional customer service manager; to proceed, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

Crystal

Thanks Crystal. I have an email out to the salesperson who sold me the car. She said she will look into it for me. If she doesn't get back to me then I will go with what you suggested. I appreciate it.

You may have or don't have the windshield rattle like I do. Peter has posted the TSB 12-9-3 details on the sticky post messages. I have already done the A-pillar TSB and after reading TSB 12-9-3, it seems that it's where the culprit is.

I appreciate the reply, but it has happened when the vehicle wasn't even in motion. I haven't been in the Explorer for a while so I need to get back in and check around.
