I bought the biggest I could get at Meijers.... 6 ton AC Delco jack stands. I know it is excessive... but they're not that expensive, only $35 for a pair.

Also, keep this in mind....
When you get jack/jackstands, if you have a lift or plan on getting a lift, get the larger capacity ones. Not because they can hold up a bulldozer, but the heavier capacity ones will be able to raise your truck higher.. like when you need to work on the suspension. And the larger base gives it a little more stability.
A lesson I learned when I had some lightweight stands and tried to let the front droop all the way to replace the front springs.

Here's something funny,

I broke down at a mud bog race, and this one guy came over with a high lift jack. Guess what his high lift couldn't even get one tire off the ground. We were all like no way..

Knut... Bottom line... That's PHUCKING COOL!

If you plan to do some Off-Roading, then I would Highly Suggest that you get a Hi-Lift Jack. I have found one of the cheapest sites on the web that sells them. I know that most places will meet or beat prices but hey these people already seem to be the cheapest!

I would suggest that you also get the Bumper Lift attachment, This way you do not need to make or find a place to lift your explorer from, you can just use the bumper.

the hi-lift is good for off-road, but don't even think of using it to support your vehicle while your working under it. That thing'll tip over and kill you in no time. Also, your experience with the hi-lift is not uncommon. Lots of times we'll be off-road and use the hi-lift to jack the vehicle but our wheels droop so much you won't even be able to get the tire off the ground. Kinda sucks when your changing a flat :).
I agree about the jack stands, gotta get the biggest, baddest out there. When I was working on the suspension my old 3 ton jack stands didn't come close to being able to lift the vehicle but the frame, so I got some 6 ton (somewhere near 21") jack stands and they did the trick quite nicely...
I would never, unless it was an emergancy and probably not even then, use a hi-lift to jack my vehicle up while I was working on it without a ton of jack stands underneath.

Last time I was in Moab Ray Hutchinson and I jacked up his truck with TWO hi-lifts to put his rear axle back on. It was quite wobbly and I had to hold them after a bit to keep the truck from tipping. It was our only choice and he was as carefull as possible. Pretty scary though... Not a great idea either.

thanks for the input guys. i will only be using them for getting under the X at home in my drive way. as for a lift i dont have one and i will probably not get one at all. would a hi-lift jack lift up the explorer enough to get a the jack stands under it?

Check out the Sunday Sears ad. I bought a Craftsmen 3 ton floor jack with 2 - 3 ton stands for $99.

The next day I was at Pepboys and they had a "know-name" 2 ton floor jack with stands for much more (I can't remember but I think it was $159). Yes I had to mention to the counter guy what I had just bought (got more for less). He wasn't too amused.
