safety tips and basic safety equipment

Dignan,
The category of items that are required to be in the group IS the Necessary Items. That's why I worded the preface to the Required list with the caveat that the bare-bones required items assume that you are in a group and in case of emergency the other necessary items will still be available through another group member.

Trails:
Most established well-known trails are known to be rated at a certain level and some have an additional note to the rating (rated "3", but "4" if wet). One of the Moab links (I cannot remember which one) has the trail ratings.

I just thought it would be nice to seperate the two, and make sure that the group had everything that the group needs and each individual has everything that they need.

The web site with the trail difficulties is http://www.4x4now.com/tr.htm

Gerald,
I also agree with Bill and Char on the fire Extinguisher and CB. There really is no excuse to not have these items, especially when you have this much time to prepare. What happens if I use my extinguisher on someone else at the run, then later on my way back home I need it. I am now SOL because I already used it. Don't get me wrong, I'd be the first one to jump out of my truck with my extinguisher in hand, BUT if I don't have to use it, I'd rather not. As far as the CB's, I'll tell you, it's not a whole lot of fun not having one when everyone else has one. Like I said earlier you all have more than enough time to get these things. You can get them for less than $50.00. NO EXCUSE!!.

Ray, missed you last night at the Moab chat.

CB & Fire Extinguisher are required now. I have also reworded some of the awkward passages more consisely in the Word document to make it more readable. I will finish it up tomorrow afternoon and send it to Rick.

Matt, you were thinking about what to do with your cooler. I'm also breaking my own rule a little; mine doesn't have a latching top. I wedge it in between my back seat and military shell box.

What I am going to do is buy a cooler with latching top and handles on the end. I will wedge the cooler between my back seat and the military shell box I use to hold all my gear. The shell box is already strapped down using the four cargo tiedown points in the back. I'll just run another strap to each of the handles on the cooler. Even if I do an aerobatic roll the cooler may come up off of the wedged-in position but it won't make it up to the front seat. A back seat passenger may be in trouble, though. I'll put my ex mother-in-law back there. Dead Link Removed

I don't know what to tell you with your box setup, but maybe this will jog a braincell for you and give you another idea that you could use.

wow your guys's seats must be different then mine or something, I looked at that as a spot to mount my fire extinguisher but I have literally about one inch between the seat and the door... unfortanetly where its mounted now is not really "within hands reach" but definately more accessible then other locations I looked at. So far I've never had to use a fire extinguisher but hey, I've never had to use my winch for myself and that thing cost me about $850! heh heh. Just one of those things thats great to have along "just in case", much better to have it and never use then to not have it and need it.

As for the cooler, thats an interesting location Gerald. Where I had it on the Moab pre-run was in the back seat (one seat was folded down to accomodate the sleeping platforms, the other seats stayed up), and I just set my cooler there... got a little interesting when doing extreme off-camber as well as some of the extreme up/extreme down angles... I can't count the times my cooler came and hit me in the back of the seat... unfortanetly a strap down wouldn't work because then I couldn't access the sweet sweets inside when I needed to, and besides, not sure how well it'd hold it anyways... I'm working at some brackets to keep the cooler just in one place (to keep it from going side to side, front to back), then I might design something to hold it down, and still be able to get into it without too much work... I'll let you know, it won't be done by Moab though... this weekend is reserved for fixing my "exceptional" AGR Power Steering Pump that has now been in my vehicle approximately 5 days and has already leaked out over a quart of power steering fluid, and counting!

Gerald, when you get the final word document done could you send it to me too. It seems like a very good list and I wouldn't mind having a copy with bullets and everything.

Matt, ok, since you've got it in the seat, how about this idea (I am assuming you have handles on the end of the cooler to strap to).

You know how they make kid seats and stuff that strap in directly using a connected seat belt? Can you plug in your seat belt back there, and then strap from your handles to the belt? When you hit bumps or unusual attitudes, the belt will lock in place and hold the cooler in place too. Whaddya think?

Dignan, I'll be happy to send the Word doc to anyone who wants it.

Gerald

could you send me a copy please
