well, i yanked out the superchip and headed down to my mechanic (not my usual one, though; my backup one ;) ) and we found a code (though my check engine light was only on for a few hours on saturday then shut itself off.) the code is P1260 is the code. he said it comes up as an "anti-theft" type of code, so, im happy thats its nothing important, but what the hell is it? he thought maybe the key is getting old and the chip inside is maybe wiggling loose or something, but i dont know. he cleared it for me, so if it pops up again, we'll know, but im hoping someone from here might have some more insight into what the code could mean.

thanks.

check engine

I'm down to 25 miles left on my extended warranty. Any advice on what to have them check while it's there? The check engine light came on but has since gone out. The service guy told me they can only check the computer codes if the light is on at the time. True???

no, they can scan for codes with the light off. my light was on for a few hours saturday and went off on its own. it was off when the mechanic scanned it today. once that light goes on, the code is stored until they use the computer to clear it.

did you speak to the ford service department? if you did, theres your problem, heh. if they say they cant scan for codes unless the light is on, ask them to do it anyway.

No, the computer can sometimes store codes even if the light goes off. With the warranty almost out, I'd go in complaining of the tranny slipping, irregular idle, and maybe a few other things. Maybe you can get some new parts for cheap ;)

Thanks for the tips! Any other things?? The tranny is something that has actually acted up and I wouldn't have thought to mention it before checking out this board.... just thought it was an uncommon occurance. I always think I'm imagining problems. Yeah... clueless and female.... they see me coming! I appreciate the info very much. They also will charge me $80 to check the computer codes, sound right? If they find warranty work I think they might waive it.
Also going to ask about the disappearing radio display, I had forgotten about that also. Don't know if that's covered but worth checking as I guess it's around $400-600. The thing I've noticed lately is that it doesn't want to start on a dime as it used. When it turns over the engine revs - no, my foot's not on the gas :) Also, the red theft light has started staying on or blinking after the car's on and I'm driving. Please let me know if there's somewhere else I should look for this type info.
Again, THANKS for your replies!!

Shelly,
About being female and seeing you coming, it can sometimes be true. But raise your voice and ask for the manager if you feel you are not being listened to. Believe me, most guys get a little scared when I woman starts throwing attitude at them. Also, a lot of the time, us guys have to ask for a manager before we get heard.

If you are worried about the $80 code reading, call your local Autozone (if they are local there) and asked when a good time to get your OBD II codes read for free would be (sometimes the employees in the store at that time are not trained in scanning). If there are any codes, ask the code reader not to erase them. Then go to Ford and tell them that your CEL came on on the way over there. That way you know that there are codes there and all costs should be waived under warranty.

If you are having tranny problems, definately bring that up to them. Make sure that they understand that you are definately have a tranny problem. Bring up all your problems including the radio. BTW, if the radio isn't covered, you can get them all day on eBay for a lot less, depending on options.

And Shelly, Welcome To The Forum! May I suggest starting a new post with this and other questions. We have kind of gotten off of tbomb's original post.

tbomb, sorry I can't help you man......Good Luck!

Robb
