wow got quite a story to tell so bear with me....I am dropping off a friend of mine who lives maybe 15 minutes from my house so I take the beltway (I live in DC area). I am driving about 60-65, nothing real dangerous but then I see a ridiculous amount of brake lights ahead of me (they were repaving 2 lanes of the 4 lane beltway) so I start to causually ease on the brakes. While doing this I notice that I am not getting the normal amount of decceleration that I normally get so I start to press the brake firmer. I keep pressing all the way to the floor but I am getting minimal resistance and have only been slowed to I'm guessing 50-55 mph. At this point I am kinda paniced so I start repumping the brake repeatidly all the way to the floor....to hardly any avail. Now I was going roughly 40 mph and I had maybe 7-8 car lengths till I slam the back of the car ahead of me. I try the brakes one last time to no avail so I quickly downshift into 1st gear (ouch...it's an automatic too) and slam on the emergancy brake while I vier off to the left shoulder (I was in fast lane when brakes went out)....I'm thinking this is my last resort to slamming the back of this guy. When I did it I start bouncing off the rev-limiter like crazy and I am starting to turn sideways....Luckily I was able to manuever the car to the shoulder(barely a shoulder, was about the size of a friggin bike path) w/o plowing the guy in front of me, I did however side-swipe the front-left of my car on the concrete barrier but I could have cared less because the car was stopped and I was safe.....I was real shaken up and I immediatley called a tow truck. I was towed to the local Merchants station, and they wanted to give me an estimate on the brakes and body work....I laughed and said just the brakes pal, no body work...I could care less how the paint looks. It was seriously one of the scariest moments of my life and I hope no one here EVER has to experience it. The brakes had barely any prior symptoms so I was puzzled. Two days later (today) I get an estimate for pretty much an entire new brake system. They said that the reason for the brake failure was a faulty brake master cylinder and worn down brake pads. There are also some other components that I am going to need to buy like rotors and brake lines...so I am pretty much going to need an entire new brake system. The estimate was $1739 parts and labour. HOLY CRAP thats a lot. I only have about 600 in my bank so I would have to put all my summer net wages into this brake repair. But on the other hand the friggin car is worth $2300. I could just as easy buy another crappy 91 explorer. I went home thinking this in mind and I told my mother that I would just buy another explorer and part-out the old one. Her response to me was "How about I buy you a new explorer, a 98 or something?" So something good actually came out of the incident...I am getting a new explorer! My question is what newer model years should I look for? Is the suspension better on 98+ models? Is it worth it performance-wise to go V8 rather than V6? I am pretty set on getting a Black, preferably eddie bauer. Keep in mind I have a spending stipend of 15 G's. Tell me what you think I should get?
