Hello everyone, I have a question in regards to SCTx-4 tuners. I have a 2000 explorer drive line in my 1999 2wd ranger. I have had a recurring code p401 insufficient egr flow. I have all of the explorer ECU and emissions equipment in the ranger.
From what I have heard I can turn off the egr function with a SCT tuner.I haven't purchased a tuner yet, but from what I hear the one to use is the SCT.
When the truck is fully warm ,at slow speeds I am getting a slow shudder from the egr opening and closing.
I have a new EGR and a new control solenoid, with good clean hoses but the situation still exists. I would like to be able to deactivate this feature to improve driveability, but I realize that I will have to richen up the mixture to compensate for the EGR not functioning.
I would also like to tighten up the transmission shifts, and delay the converter lock up. Again I have been told that the SCT x4 is what I want.
Is there anybody out there that can give me some insight on this?
Thanks.
Dan.

I use the SF3/ 3015 model in my 5.0 swapped 01 Ranger and have great results. There is an option for EGR off. My egr plugs are zip tied up and there is no EGR anything on truck and I have no CEL.

Had the same issue. I have an X4 and I turned off the EGR and no more P0401. I also increased the WOT fuel mixture about I think 4 of 6% to deal with some things where it seemed I was running too lean

I think that P401 code is what I had when I solved it with a new DPFE, but that was around 2005. I would try replacing that first before giving up on the EGR. The DPFE is sensitive to temperatures(can have a symptom in Winter but not when warm).

Yea for sure on the too lean. I have a nice mandrel bent 2 1/4 primary pipes with high flow cats that feed through a flowmaster merge into a 3" single walker dynomax muffler.(scrubber cats are long gone).
It seems that it need to be a little fatter. The cold start is a little balky until it stabilizes.
I just scored a set of new old stock FMS explorer headers that I am planning on using. With having a k&n filter and the better flowing exhaust, I feel i'm leaving some HP on the table.
Thanks.
Dan.

99.999% of the time p0401 is caused by a faulty dpfe.

Turning off the EGR with the tuner doesn't stop it from functioning.

It stops it from throwing the fault code.

I tried turning mine off and it still functions, just no code, just like the rear O2 sensors.

If you want it to stop functioning you'll have to manually disable it.

I lost all confidence with SCT after talking to a total self absorbed idiot in their tech support yesterday.

How difficult is it to replace a faulty DPFE on a 5.0 V8??

It's not very hard, that's the device that the two rubber hoses go into at the top. Getting the two small bolts off is the whole deal, not as easy as the IAC but not bad at all.
