Hey guys. I've searched and searched and read god knows how many threads about pinging and knocking on my SOHC. It only happens under loads between 2500 and 3000 RPM's. I've clean my MAF, IAC, K&N, Checked my TPS, installed new Motorcraft double plats (replaced Bosch +4's) and Motorcraft wires, and still get the pinging. I've read also about the higher octane not being good if it is pretty much stock.

Any suggestions or should the next step be the Seafoam to see if it helps? My "BABY" has 87000 miles on her and wnat her to stick around alot longer.

Are you sure it is not the timing chains? Mine does the same thing. (mostly when cold).

The Ford dealer tried to tell me it may be pinging, and that I should try premium gas, but that I would have to "spend more money for them to get farther into it" Yeah Right! They charged me $50 for them to test dive it for half an hour, and then had the guts to tell me I would have to spend more money for them to tell me what it was.

I did the SeaFoam thing on my mother in laws 4.0 SHOC and it helped. SeaFoam is some good stuff I did it to mine 4 weeks ago and it made a difference...

I just sea foam'd my engine a few days ago, My truck did not smoke one bit, it was kinda weird, but it runs a lot better now...I say it cant hurt...just follow the directions on the label

It is your timing chain slapping around, not pinging. It sounds sort of like a machine - ratcheting (rapid) sound right? I'm quite sure that is what it is, same thing happened to me.

Alright, if it is my timing chain, you got any suggestions? Do you mean the chain needs replaced or the guide is worn and it has too much slack in it?

Any help since I don't do much internal work on engine?
Thanks

On mine it was the rear casset chain tensioner, and while they were back there they replaced a few things... it was a week of work for FORD, to get to the rear chains you have to take the engine out :(
Here is my invoice:

Did this fix the problem? Did you ever have the front Timing chain tensioner replaced? This is the so called TSB 02-8-1 using Kit 2U3Z-6D256-AA This is what I am told that I need for my 2000, and that it should fix the problem , but there is no guarentee.

I think that by 2000 they had the rear chain problem fixed, but I am not sure of this...

As for the pinging on the 4.0 SOHC it is a normal thing.. If you are under warranty you can go to the dealer and they can reprogram the computer for a adjusted octane but that will only help a little. and it will get worse or better when the fuel companies go back the Winter formula. just to note all I'm talking about is the Pinging. as for the Timing chain tensioner The TSB 02-8-1 using Kit 2U3Z-6D256-AA we had it done on our 01 Ranger and it did help allot....

Yes it worked... It is just expensive and a long time (week +) without your vehicle.
PS: SOHCs should not ping. They have a knock sensor which retards the timing when it senses spark knock.

yes it does have a knock sensor that will help with the pinging but when it is under a load most 4.0 sohc will have a slight ping.

Just SEAFOAMED it!

Well, I thought I would go ahead and try the Seafoam first to see if it helped at all. Just did it today and I was smoking pretty good so it must of been pretty dirty in there. I've got a trip coming up so I'll see if there is any difference and let everyone know if that fixed my problem. Thanks everybody for the input.

I have found the AMSOIL POWER FOAM to be far superior to the sea foam here's a link:Dead Link Removed

I'm new to the site and also have a '01 Sport with 65,000 that pings around 2600 to 2900 rpm. Could someone tell me what SeaFoam is?

It's a cleaner you can add to the intake manifold or into the gas. You can find it at most auto parts stores (not Autozone's however). Do a search for Seafoam on this site and you'll find plenty of info.

The "pinging" you are experiencing on the 4.0 engines are most likely the timing chain. If it were true pinging, you would never hear it because the SOHC engine has a knock sensor.

Yeah our Taurus doesn't have a knock sensor for some idiotic reason, and it pings pretty loudly under load sometimes. The Explorer has never pinged, but that timing chain is getting louder. I guess 108K miles will do that.

Oh well, it's not that bad. I don't know why people fret about the noise. I never hear it with the windows up.

I think that the reason people are fretting about the noise is that the noise is indicative of a design problem, metal hitting against metal, (or plastic) that at some point these components will fail, and grenade the whole motor.
