Well, i know it's an explorer and all, but why does my explorer seem so weak? its a 1993 w/ 127,000 miles on it. my brother said its because i have 3.27's with 31in tires. is this true, he told me to either find an explorer limited and get the diffs out of them or buy new gears and get a limited slip out of the limited. And there is a explorer limited at my local junk yard that i could get the stuff out of. I have replaced the air filter, running Amsoil Synthetic oil, and i'm soon to remove the cat's and replace muffler with a higher flow muffler. Is the problem my high gearing or that it's just an explorer and not to expect much out of it? cuz when your friend in a 95 nissan pickup w/ a 4clyinder absolutly dogs you... it kinda gets you depressed.

Yeah... 3.27's and 31"s, its probably a dog. Try a tune up before anything. When i had 3.27's i was still able to smoke my 32"S, but that was by dumping the clutch of course :p

Now with 4.56 and 32's, all i gotta do is nail the gas at the right time :D

Swapping in 3.73 axles would probably save you money over getting re-geared. Unless you can do it yourself...

If want to re-gear (tell me about it, im re-gearing my front axle as we type), then make it easier on yourself and get what you want the first time.

Dont go with 3.73 now, because you need it now, if you know you are going to be throwing 33"s on there in a couple months.

See what im saying? If you plan on staying with 31"s, then by all means 3.73 is probably all you need. But 4.10 (or even 4.56) would be better if you plan on putting bigger tires one later.

BTW, leave alteast one of the cats on there, its really gonna kill your power if you just run a straight pipe.

well i have been thinkin about gears and such, but my mom said that i'm only gonna be using this vehicle til next spring or early summer, so i do not want to go all out on it, i just want it a little more off road worthy. i'm not gonna lift the truck any, if i do anything it will be those front springs that give like 1.5in of lift in the front just to give a little more clearance. i'm about to buy a new set of 31x10.5 mud terrain tires for it, but i think my fuel mileage is gonna suffer because it takes a good bit of pedal pushing to get it goin. So if i just threw some 4.56's in it and a limited slip in the rear i should be fine. (my original plans for this truck was 5.5in lift, 33's and 5.13's w/ manual lock in hubs in the front w/ a mini spool, and a quicklock locker in the rear) but mom said this is just gonna be a winter truck then sell it, so forget puttin $ into it then losing it all when i try to sell. And about the cats, i'm gonna put smaller tubing in place to keep the 'back pressure' there.

If you are just keeping the 31's, then a gear ratio of 4.56 will kill your gas mileage. If you are going to sell it and stick with 31's until then, the Lowest gear(highest numerically) that you should run is 4.10's. And even then, that is if you just do city driving. If i were you,and could find some stock axles with 3.73's in them, just swap them in. That will be your cheapest and easiest option.

yeah skip the 4.56 if you plan on selling it, and if you dont plan going bigger then 31"s

Just swap in the 3.73 axles, and put a Lockright in the rear. That way it will cost you less then $500 bucks to get you geared/locked, and you can put it back to stock (open) much much easier.

Limited slip = open, when one wheel gets off the ground.

Is it just me, or are you telling him to do a sollid axle swap in the front, also? Because I am also interested in doing a front axle swap on my X, but don't know how to go about it. I mean, I have a general idea, I know how to put one in the rear, but how would I go about changing from my arms to a solid tube? and you said you need the cat to get enough backpressure for fuel milage and power? crap, I'm screwed then, lol.

nahh, they're not telling me to swap the axle to a solid front axle, they are telling me to just find an explorer in the junk yard or somewhere with 3.73 gears and install those gears in my axles or just get the entire axles out & install them on my truck. (the stock TTB front end and 8.8 rear end will still be used) Which is more than likely what i'll do because it is cheaper and if i can find one w/ limited slip i'll just get that because i won't be doing to much articulation type stuff
