My XLT 5.0 All Wheel Drive has a bad CV joint I dont feel like buying a new one and I want better gas milage. I told my father and he said that his friends just took the drive shaft off if something happened to the awd and make it a rear wheel drive I was wondering if it is possible to do this. I will extemely appreciate your input.

Depends on what CV is bad. If its one of the half shafts, they are need to hold the hub in. Removing them as a whole is a no-no. Removing the driveshaft is possible. There will power loss because of the transfer case still applying power to the front(or trying to atleast). If you do this, make sure to use your parking brake.

Ditto. You can't remove the halfshaft because of the wheel bearing issue, unless you don't mind your wheel continuing down the freeway without the rest of the vehicle.

And you can't remove the front driveshaft because it will cause the transfer case to slip at all times, generating a lot of heat and eventually wearing it out. You will also lose the ability to park on an incline without using the parking brake as the transfer case will allow the truck to slip even though the transmission is in park.

Also, disconnecting the front driveshaft will not result in better mileage. The front halfshafts and differential still turn at all times.

The short answer is if you want a 2wd, you should buy a 2wd.

Or fix the problem, or do the proper conversion to 2WD.
