my problem is with my '95 Explorer 4wd. I recently noticed my front wheel bearings were shot. the passenger side was really bad & the drivers side had very minimal slack. the day I jacked it up & checked them another guy swore tightening the hub nut would take the slack out. little did he know the bearings arent adjustable on this model so he torqued it down a good bit over factory torque. I let it down off the jack & started home & I noticed a pretty bad shake in the steering wheel when I backed out of the driveway. I stopped & noticed the cap on the power steering pump was off. I drove home really slow & it shook intermittently the whole trip, anytime I turned the wheel...sitting still up to 40 mph it doesnt change. I replaced the hub assembly on the really bad side but it didnt seem to affect it. I topped off the power steering fluid & bled the pump to no avail. it still does it anytime I turn the wheel, wether sitting still or running at speed. feels like something jerking the wheel about 1/2 an inch side to side really fast. possibly the power steering pump going out or is there another likely culprit? could he have damaged something else putting too much torque on the hub? I dorve it several days with the bearing humming before I changed the hub but it never shook like this until after the nut was tightened.

no ideas? I am desperate...without a ride until i get this figured out. any help is greatly appreciated!

Violent steering shake when replacing hub

I have had the same thing happen when I replaced my hub. I used an impact wrench to tighten the nut down not realizing there was a torque spec. After backing the nut off a little bit it quit. Would over tightening cause the steering to fight itself when you are turning. It would do it just sitting and turning the wheel also. I have now replaced the hub again yesterday because the first one went out. I tightend the nut by hand using a breaker bar and never got the violent steering shake this time. After searching I see there is a torque and will do that tonight. Just so I know could over tightening the nut cause that.
