I have a '95 Ranger 3.0 with the 4R44E A/T . It seems that the trans shifts into 4th too soon, resulting in a valve clatter, much the same as a manual tranny would if you shifted into 4th too soon or were going too slow for that gear. I'm pretty sure the tranny takes it's cues from the PCM and the PCM gets inputs from a variety of sensors, among them the throttle position sensor.
Would I be looking in the right direction in suspecting the TPS or do you guys think this is a tranny issue? I recently did a valve body rebuild on the tranny which eliminated a slip between 2nd and 3rd and replaced the EPC solenoid. However, the truck always seemed like it would drop into 4th too soon so it's not a new problem that surfaced after the v/b rebuild. Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance guys.
