I bought a 98 explorer sport with the OHV. I've already done the brown wire mod, but would like to do some more to help performance wise. I would like some kind of shift kit, i saw B&M makes one, but is it compatible with my transmission, I believe its the 5R55E. And is it easy to install? For the intake, will an adpater for a SOHC fit the OHV or are they different? I will probably be doing the exhaust before too long, im looking at the dynomax kit. Im also looking to put the Westin Safari Lightbar on my ex, but it says for 4 door only? I cant see much of a difference in the front end of the 2 door or 4 door, so it should fit right? Im not looking for anything radical performance wise, just a nice daily driver that can hold its own. Im already impressed with the motors low end torque, it easily lights up the rear tire and smokes it, something Im not used to being able to do with my old rodeo. I will probably soon have the transmission flushed and a filter change, its at 62,000 miles, i believe it was done at around 30,000 as well. Is it normal for me to get around 14 mpg around town and 18 highway? It seems kind of low, especially with the 3.73s. My rodeo got 22 highway with 4.56s, and wieghed about 700 pounds more. Thanks in advance..

The KKM intake (part no. TR-054098) www.kustomz.com fits 4.0L 98+ OHV AND 97+ SOHC. Not sure about other manufacturers. If you're interested, i'm selling a slightly used KKM that'll fit...see http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122286

Generally, unless they say they're not sure it will fit, take the manufacturers word. If it says "will only fit 2 door," chances are that, without major modification, it won't fit a 4-door.

Your gas mileage is average compared to what i've seen here. I'm envious!

Thanks for the heads up on the intake. I cant see that there will be any difference of the front ends on the 4 door vs the 2 door, I may just email them and find out. Thanks again.

My advice is the KKM or a K&N FIPK for the intake
A BBK 66mm Throttle Body
2.5" cat back exhaust
and a performance tuner or chip.

As to the shift kit. I personally prefer the tuner for it is able to re map the shift points in your transmission.

Gotta love the computer age. You can also recalibrate your speedo for tire size and in some products have the ability to make many of the setting choices yourself rather than just a pre programmed setting.
Of course all of that adds to the price very quickly.

I f you are not seeking a "fast" explorer rather a good daily driver this should do you well.

The 4.0 OHV does have aftermarket heads, headers, superchargers, and such availabe. Though hard to find.

Personally for my Daily Driver I don't find the involved build up neccessary, just a few bolt-ons.

From what I have been reading, doing a lot of it lately because of this stupid cold I have, that the chip would be the way to go. Is there a specific one that would be good, on the lower side of the price spectrum and doesnt require high octance gas? I will probably upgrade to some 31-10.50-15 tires, as the 235s seem rather small and it looks like theres plenty of room to add them. As I said, I had a 92 Rodeo, and this thing flies compared to it. The only time I really ask for more power is up mountains. But its still got enough guts to get me up the mountains in 3rd gear at 50 mph, something I only dreamed of in my rodeo (2nd gear screaming at 5000 RPMS at 50 mph up mountains). For the exhaust, I want something not too loud, but a deeper tone that can be heard, i cant even hear the exhaust on this one. But I also dont want to break the bank either.

as far as exhaust goes, a nice 40 series Flowmaster would do ya well. A little loud for my liking. However, i downgraded to a Flow. Delta50 with 2.5 piping and love it. The flowmaster Force II catback system is good for the under $200 pricetag and includes a 50 series.

I've looked at the flowmasters, I guess my old rodeo just didnt have the motor, or had the wrong flowmaster on it, it didnt sound that impressive at all. I'll be reexamining them again. THanks

Where did you find this system, and is it for the OHV with single inlet muffler? A part number would probably help track down the one I need. I found the system for a 96 sport, but it says it goes for 319 on the flowmaster website. Thanks again

The Westin bar on the 2 door is no good...the sports have the tow hooks in the front that probably use the same frame holes the lightbar needs...

I didnt realize I had tow hooks on the front of my sport. I guess I will have to check that out tomorrow morning. I didnt realize it had fog lights either when I first bought it. Thanks

Well, the manufacturer will always be more expensive. I was only able to find a complete system for the 98 SOHC Sport - $230 @ www.summitracing.com. The system for my 96 OHV, if i bought the Force II kit, was around $200 at Summit.

You can ask around to see if people have Flowmaster kits for their OHV Sports, but your best bet is to go to www.flowmastermufflers.com, find the muffler you want, buy it at Summit and take it to a local muffler shop to have piping bent to your liking.

I actually have 2 1/4" piping, not 2.5. I bought a FLO-842451 2.25in/out Stainless Steel (not polished) muffler ($114 shipped @ Summit) and had 2.25 piping bent OEM style for another $125. Like i said, it's not overwhelmingly loud or aggressive (hoped it'd be a bit louder) but 2.5" in/out muffler & piping should make a difference. The 2.5 in/out muffler is the same price, but the piping may cost u xtra

I looked at the front of my explorer today, no tow hooks. Now if I can just figure out how to wire up my stereo the right way.

Just figured I would update as to what I found out about the light bar. Westin says that the part number for the mount kit is 30-1145. So it looks like that is still doable for me

I have a westin safari bar on a sport Try www.Summitracing.com thats where I bought mine with no problems
Im actually hoping my parents buy me one for christmas, or give me the cash to get one and a set of lights. I can get one from work for about 120 plus the 20 for the mounting kit with my discount. What mounting kit did you go with or don't you have the part number any more?

Dan

I still have the receipt for it so I can look up a part number and post back when I get the chance.

ok - sorry for the confusion on the tow hooks then....anyone know what years they were on the sport - or was it optional?
