The shift motor has craped out on me again. How hard is it to remove and replace the transfer case shift motor in a 92 xlt. Does it require dropping the transfer case or is just bolt off bolt on. I am going to try and find a used motor and install it myself. save a couple hundred.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks

Take off the anti vibration weight

I think there are three bolts on the switch assembly and one on the back of the motor. I cut the brown wire and just pull out the speed sensor. I think it is a mistake to get a used one. I have never seen a motor burn or wear out. The lubrication on the motor or the switch plate gets dirty. I've seen the grease in thw switch assembly dry out so bad that it turned into rock hard crystals. Any used motor you get will likely be in as bad a shape. Remove the motor and lubricate it with very light oil, synth if possible or tranny fluid. I remove switch gear (so it doesn't hit the stop) and run the motor in with a brake light in series with the motor. Should draw less than 3/4 amp. More instructions on

Take the motor out and take the motor apart - clean the brushs inside. That's probably the problem - just dirt. Should take 2 hrs. plenty of postings.
