Has anyone ever replaced the shifter handle. Seems on eBay they only sell the entire assembly as a piece. Nothing mechanical, the chrome part on top has a huge scratch/ gouge. I want to go to a salvage yard and "Extract" one if it's easy enough.

The shifters are a single piece and I have had to replace mine twice under warrantee because the shift interlock mechanism failed (ford changed vendors and no more problems now). I believe the the chrome top is just pressed on and can be pried off.

When you say "Interlock Mechanism" are you talking about that little selanoid switch that relaeases the handle when you apply the brake? Reason I ask is mine is intermittent so I ordered a new one to replace it. Has not arrived yet. I'll try the prying trick, if I screw it up, I'll replace the whole thing. You can get them on eBay for $50...

chrome top cap is glued on, so it comes as one part including the whole shifter. I'll PM ya...

Yeah, that is what I am talking about. I had it completely lock up twice on me and the only way to get it to shift from Park to drive (or something like that) was to turn the vehicle off and then start it again and then put it in drive. The shifter starts out by having an intermittant issue that is solved sometimes by pushing the brake pedal down really hard but then it just fails completely and you have to use the emergency release button hidden inside the cup holders.

Did you ever get your scratched shifter chrome cap replaced?

I am having a similar problem. The chrome cap is different from the newly purchased cap. Mine has 4 clips which face in, the new cap has only 2 clips which face out. I suspect I will need to replace the shifter knob to replace the chrome cap. Asking around to see if anyone has run across this issue and how it was solved.
