Hey guys, I am in the process of removing the 5 spd tranny from my 93 explorer xl and was wondering how the shifter handle comes off. My lame chiltons manual is very vague. I removed four bolts from the top of the tranny around the handle but it does not budge. I looked forward on the tranny throught the cab and there apears to be two more bolts that I can see, but don't think that I can access them. Am I missing something? Thanks.

which tranny do you have? Is it the stock transmission? If its the M5od there are just 4 bolts. When i put my M5OD in i just put the tranny in neutral and pulled the 4 bolts and it came right up. what is your reasoning pulling the stick?

I am pulling the shifter to install a new clutch. I believe it is the m5od according to my LAME chiltons manual. Like I said before, I removed four bolts that I saw around the shifter and it doesn't move at all. Then I looked forward through the hole in the tranny tunnel and can see at least two more bolts, but I'm not sure if they hold the shifter down or not. Also, how do you access the top two bolts on the clutch housing? Does the exhaust need to come off? Thanks for the response.

To update this thread, I accessed the top two bolts of the clutch housing through the engine compartment, earlier I didn't think that I could squeeze my arm in there but I did. The shifter handle looks like it has about eight bolts holding the cover on, does this sound right for the m505 tranny? Thanks.

updating the update: I figured out the shifter handle removal problem. The shifter handle has a stud that goes through the base of the shifter handle with a nut on one side. I removed the nut from the front side and threaded it onto the back side and tightened it untill the stud pulled out releasing the shifter handle.
