My 97 ranger with auto hubs shifts into low but not 4wd even though the dash lights come on (not blinking).
I am assuming this means something with the front axle.
My questions are (1) were is the fuse(s) located and (2) what else could it be?

A '97 Ranger with Auto hubs, that would be a BW 13-54 transfer case, with a D35 TTB front suspension, right?

If the transfer case is shifting, then the problem isn't electrical. I expect you are correct in that it is something in the axle, none of which is electrical. Most likely it is the auto hubs themselves. The first thing I would do would be to pull the hubs. Clean off the cam and see if it looks stripped and clean out all the excess grease that builds up in the hub over the years (and sometimes gets mistakenly packed in there when people grease the bearings). The excess grease can interfere with the operation of the hubs.

If the hubs are shot, you'll probably come off a lot cheaper to switch to manual hubs.

Yes that would be 4low.
Well I guess I will take the hubs off and have a look but I am not sure exactly what I am looking for.

You are looking to clean out all the excess grease. These are considered "dry" hubs, and should only have a thin film of grease on them.

There are pictures of the cam assembly in the 1st gen front brake job diary in the General Explorations forum.
