iam looking at a 99 explorer 4wd xlt v6 auto and would like to know if they are a good & reliable truck as they are not real popular in Australia (every one wants land cruisers) took 1 for a drive is much better than my jackaroo (trooper i think) and are there any real problems with them? please talk me into buying it!!!

SOHC or HOV ..?

Ok there are two V-6s in the Explorer for that year. The 4.0 Litre SOHC, and the 4.0 Litre OHV. If you open the hood up, and see a plastic covering that says SOHC on it, well guess what you have? :D

If you have the SOHC, that is the stronger and more powerful V-6, but it is also has been known to have numerous mechanical problems related to the cam tensioners. If you can get this fixed under warranty (The warranty goes until 72K miles or umm...160KM?) then it's a great engine. You will notice it's gets a somewhat bad reputation around here, but being an SOHC owner, I can say that mine has given me no problems, and I love the engine :) When the tach hits 6K I know i'm glad I got this engine.

The OHV, even though it is certainly not as powerful speed-wise (160 HP vs. 210 HP) is more reliable since it has been around much longer, and it will last 200K miles (420 KM) easily. There are literally hundreds of X's on here that last into the 150K-200K mile range without ever needing an engine re-build, and perhaps 1 tranmission re-build.

Yes, the trannys are the weak point in the truck, but again, they are not bad by any means, and when you think about the amount of strain put on the AOD-E (5R55E if you have the SOHC) it lasts for a long time. Put a transmission cooler on and no worries :D

Hope you get the X and enjoy it! They really are great trucks, and will last a long, long time. You'll really stand out too in Australia :)

i would buy an Xplor. i have two, 91 xlt and a 98 limited. never had any problem other than a fuel pump in the 91. they're great vehicles. but do whatever

I have a 99 V-6 XLT with the OHV. Yes it's slow, but if you're using it for looks then don't worry about it. Personally I think it's a great X. If you want a kick, make sure you get the 210hp version instead, or else it'll cost a LOT to get it fast.

Love mine

Yeah I love our 99 SOHC, it's a nice ride, the only thing that ever happened was the throttle body plate started to stick. Got it fixed under warrenty. Other than that its a great car, my stock MACH is louder than a buch of my friends who put money into aftermarket speakers(not subs). Plus the black paint looks soo nice after a good waxing. Plus if everyone else has land cruisers, your X would definatly stand out. I can go on and on about how I like mine, but its up to you and if you can imagine yourself enjoying it. Also, how you liked the test drive, keep us posted weather you bought it or not.

I LOVE my 2001 SOHC V6, it's basically the same. It's GREAT!!! Look to see what type of options it has. Try to get something with a 3.73 or 4.10 gearing and a LS if you like to offroad. These are great SUV's and are becoming great Street and Offroading vehicles. Good luck!:D

diod the test drive thing (blooy nice) the work has now started on the dealer. if he drop a couple of thou tomorrow i will buy it
Dont know about the diff but at 100kph (60 mph) it is doing about 1900 rpm
thanks for the info personally & the site in general it has helped greatly
PS 200 miles= 320 km not 420 to work it out try this

Miles 200x8=1600/ 5= 320km
320kmx5=1600/8=200 miles
works no matter what the mileage/kilometre this is always pretty close

sorry forget its the ohc model

Sounds like you have 3.73s or maybe even 4.10s on there :D With the SOHC, the short gears are a great combo. Glad you liked the X. :)
