should i change fluid?

I have a 94 explorer with 109,000 miles i have no clue if the tranny fluid has been changed but its black I've heard i should change it immediately but also heard to wait for the tranny to die because it would create more problems to change it.

if the transmission fluid is anything less then good condition (does not smell burnt, color is a vibrant red) DO NOT CHANGE IT.

You may drop the pan to change the filter and the 2-4 quarts that come out with the pan. But that is the most you should do.
