Hello everyone,

My explorer had reached 98,000 Miles (2002 XLT) and its beginning to act like a bucking bronco.

It seems that when i back out of my driveway and cut the wheel to start going stright in drive, it bucks, accelerates then stops and accelerates then stops very quickly and causes the car to buck, sometimes heavily and sometimes lightly.

My 2009 Mountaineer does something similar, but since its a lease and goes back in 3 months, i couldn't care less, but since my explorer is my baby and i will drive it until it rust away, I'm a little concerned.

Anyway, my condition even happening when I'm stopped at a light for a bit, i hit the gas lightly or heavily and it starts bouncing until i reach a little speed in which it'll stop.

I think it may be the transmition not engaging properly , so do you think i should change the fluid? Ive had a few previous issues with the tranny that have seemed to all smooth them self's out but this seems to me a worsening condition. Its never been changed, the ford manual says its a 100,000 mile fluid, and my Haynes book says its a 150,000 mile fluid from the dealer. So its never been changed. I seem to get a lot of different opinions about weather or not to change the fluid since people say different things about the viscosity of the fluid, but since it a 100,000 miles fluid, should that apply to me?

Also, should i change the transfer case fluid? Thats never been changed either and in my hanyes book it dosnt say what millage to change the fluid, only to make sure its full.

Thanks it advance to any who can help,
-Blake

I vote yes to both. Your problem may not be the transmission, but if you don't do the required maintenance, it soon could be.
