:roll:correct me if im wrong but, my understanding is 91-94 explorers have an 8.8 rear diff and dana 35 front? I want to put a spool in the front but cant find one, where can i find one? Ive found spools for the rear for about $100, but I've heard it can break axles and wear tires fast on pavement, Is this true? Thanks for any help

8.8 and a D35 is right. A spool makes both tires turn of the same speed, even while turning around corners. This adds a lot of wear and tear on the tires, u-joints etc. If you were looking to install one in the front you can expect to start spending money on whatever is the weakest link in the front driveline. I haven't jumped into modifying the drivelines really so maybe someone else that's been there can chime in. Remember though that as long as your hubs are unlocked it doesn't matter if you spool or not.

I'm not a baby, I am a man. I am an anchorman.

awesome, a friend and i were just talking about his ex's home on ***** island the other day. is it ok to say the w word? if not i apologize, its in good humor though.

from what ive read most people who spool their trucks use their trucks off road only, the dana 35 is a little on a weak side for the wear that a spool would cause. when i have extra money, if i ever do, and can finally re-gear, im just putting a LS unit up front. that seems to be all the hardcore-ness i will ever need based on my driving situations.

if you drive on the street at all then dont spool the front.

Not that I suggest a spool (go locker)
But, since the front hubs and drive shaft are disconnected on the road it will make 0 difference while on pavement.

I suggest a locker over a spool. It costs $100-$200 more. But you will spend MORE then the difference in price replacing front axle shafts within your 1st year of wheelin it with a spool in the front.

Yea if you have manual hubs just unlock them and you'll be fine on the street, if you have automatics then you better make sure there fully disengaged before hitting the pavement.

Also a full spool in the front would make turning off-road a hassle.

I would also recomend a locker up front, a spool will never unlock and let your axles unwind, it puts a lot more stress on your shafts and joints to have a lot of windup in them that can't release.

DO not I repeat DO NOT put a mini spool in the 8.8. I busted 2 and a friend of mine just found out his is toast. To do a full spool in the rear will require a "C" clip eliminator kit. I would suggest you just weld the rear. I've had mine welded since November 05.

alright thanks for the warning, sounds like i will just spend more money on a locker and stop bein a cheap ass!

Yep, lockers are the way to go. And they do not advertise spools for the D35 on our Explorers, they are just too weak to handle the stresses.
